چکیده

• Hospital infection control practice reflects the working assumption that extra pulmonary tuberculosis is not considered infectious. We describe how wholegenome sequencing identified the nosocomial transmission of extra-pulmonary Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection on our Infectious Diseases unit in Oxford, UK. • Suppurating wounds in tuberculosis constitute a hazard requiring risk assessment for transmission. We have re-consideration our infection control practices in our hospital in the light of this case to account for the potential of tuberculosis transmission in settings other than just pulmonary disease. We recommend others consider similar measures.

Whole genome sequencing of Mycobacterium tuberculosis SB24 isolated from Sabah, Malaysia

Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tuberculosis) is the causative agent of tuberculosis (TB) that causes millions of death every year. We have sequenced the genome of M. tuberculosis isolated from cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of a patient diagnosed with tuberculous meningitis (TBM). The isolated strain was referred as M. tuberculosis SB24. Genomic DNA of the M. tuberculosis SB24 was extracted and subj...

Whole-Genome Sequencing of a Clinically Isolated Antibiotic-Resistant Enterococcus faecium EntfacYE

Background and Objective: Enterococcal infections are considered the most common nosocomial infections. Nowadays, enterococci show high resistance to common antibiotics, especially vancomycin. Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium is one of the most common nosocomial infections, which is included in the World Health Organization priority pathogens list for research and development of new an...

Inferring patient to patient transmission of Mycobacterium tuberculosis from whole genome sequencing data

BACKGROUND Mycobacterium tuberculosis is characterised by limited genomic diversity, which makes the application of whole genome sequencing particularly attractive for clinical and epidemiological investigation. However, in order to confidently infer transmission events, an accurate knowledge of the rate of change in the genome over relevant timescales is required. METHODS We attempted to est...

Whole-genome sequencing of rifampicin-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains identifies compensatory mutations in RNA polymerase genes

Epidemics of drug-resistant bacteria emerge worldwide, even as resistant strains frequently have reduced fitness compared to their drug-susceptible counterparts . Data from model systems suggest that the fitness cost of antimicrobial resistance can be reduced by compensatory mutations2; however, there is limited evidence that compensatory evolution has any significant role in the success of dru...

Whole Genome Sequencing Demonstrates Limited Transmission within Identified Mycobacterium tuberculosis Clusters in New South Wales, Australia

Australia has a low tuberculosis incidence rate with most cases occurring among recent immigrants. Given suboptimal cluster resolution achieved with 24-locus mycobacterium interspersed repetitive unit (MIRU-24) genotyping, the added value of whole genome sequencing was explored. MIRU-24 profiles of all Mycobacterium tuberculosis culture-confirmed tuberculosis cases diagnosed between 2009 and 20...
